Setting up Firewalls For Canasis Help

First it is important to note that firewalls are not a "feature" or "bug" in Canasis, there is nothing we can do to automatically go around the security systems you have installed, but this information can help you set up your firewall correctly.

Note: This page is still under construction, if you have added information for your kind of firewall please share it with us so everyone can benefit.

Step 1: Which Firewall(s) Do You Have?

Click one of the firewalls below. Please note that some computers have more than 1 of the below.

If you do not know which you have, or you have one not on the list, contact your ISP (Internet Service Provider) or the place you bought your computer for assistance. After you receive information from them, please contact us with a copy so we may add it here for everyone. The "ports" that Canasis uses are 23731, 23732, and 23733 (all 3 are both incoming and outgoing) and can come in from any other computer that is paging you or joining your table.

Step 2: For Windows XP builtin firewalls

  1. Click Start => Control Panel => Network Connections => Your connection (whatever you called it)

  6. Repeat above step but set description to "Canasis 2", and the ports to 23733.
  7. Click "Ok" and your done.

Step 2: For Zone Alarm

Zone Alarm is a per-program firewall. Meaning each program is allowed to use internet or not. When you try to login or enter a room normally, click yes to allow Canasis to use the internet whenever it asks.

If you did not get asked, it could be because Zone Alarm is set to "high", you need to set it to medium otherwise it won't even ask you to let Canasis use internet or not.

Step 2: For Norton

  1. Open Norton Internet Security

  2. You should see a window similar to the above, but it may not be exactly the same.
  3. Select "personal firewall" on the left side and then click the "Configure" button on the right side.
  4. Click on the "advanced" tab at the top of the window that opens.

  5. You should see a screen similar to the above.
  6. Click on the "General Rules" button

  9. Click on "Permit" and then "Next" button
  10. Click "connections to and from other computers" and the "Next" button
  11. Click "Any computer" and then "Next" button

  12. You should see a screen similar to the above.
  13. Choose "TCP" and "only the types of communication or ports listed below"
  14. Click "Add" button

  15. You should see a screen similar to the above.
  16. Choose "Individually specified ports", "local", and type in "23732 23733" into the box. Click Ok.
  17. Click "Add" button again to again go back to the earlier screen.
  18. Choose "Individually specified ports", "remote", and type in "23731 23733" into the box. Click Ok.
  19. Click "Next" button and name the rule "Canasis"

  20. You should see a screen similar to the above. This is a good place to check if you made any mistakes.

    Step 2: For Tiny

    1. Open Tiny
    2. Click "Advanced"
    3. Under the "Filter Rules" tab, make sure Canasis is not listed anywhere where it is set to not allow (block). If it is, delete those lines and click "Ok".
    4. Close Tiny
    5. Open Canasis
    6. Login

    7. You should get the above popup during login, but the numbers will be abit different. Turn on the "create appropriate filter" check box and then click the "Permit" button.
    8. In Canasis, try to enter a room normally.

    9. You should get the above popup. Turn on the "create appropriate filter" check box and then click the "Permit" button.

    Step 2: For LinkSys Routers

    1. Open a new browser window
    2. In the address bar, type "192.168.1.1"

    3. You should now be seeing the above in your browser. You may have to click on the "advanced tab".
    4. Click "forwarding" tab.

    5. For "Ex Ports", type in "23732" to "23732" in the first line and turn on the "Protocol TCP" check box.
    6. On the next line, type in "23733" to "23733" and turn on the "Protocol TCP" check box.
    7. Click apply
    8. Note: If you still experience problems, it is possible you need to turn off your router's "DHCP" system. DHCP lets your router pick random addresses for your computers. Instead you should setup your computers to use specific addresses. This is done in Windows (by typing in a static IP such as 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.2..) and disabling DHCP on your router's settings pages. At this time we do not have step by step instructions, if you are experienced and have a LinkSys router please pass on any step by step instructions you may have or screen snapshots.

Step 2: For Internet Connection Sharing and Routers

There are literally hundreds of types of connection sharing and router systems. If yours is not listed in its own section above, then you should contact your ISP (Internet Service Provider) or the place you bought your sharing/router system and ask them for step by step instructions.

After you receive the information, please share it with us by emailing us from the Canasis.com website or on the Discussions Message board.
